What I can see
The Angel is a full-body marble sculpture of the romantic era. It is two metres tall, stands on a one-meter-tall base and shows vivid signs of a classicistic influence. The figure stands with open wings, holding a fruit and staring at it, head slightly bent as a sign of reserve and courteousness. Its wings, hair and clothes are elaborately depicted. The attire is rendered with such detail that the folds of the fabric can be seen very clearly.
What I can't see
The sculptor remains unknown. According to research done by the Papadakis group in their work “60 Forms to Light”, the statue was made by Georgios Vroutos (1843-1908). However, this is not corroborated in the literature. The statue is a striking example of 20th century sculpture which, along with other works in the area, constitutes a “closed set” of public space from the early 20th century.
