What I can see

In recent years, the area of Ano (Upper) Petralona has gained a much-deserved reputation for offering alternative entertainment options. Troon Street, the surrounding neighbourhood and Merkouri Square boast a wide variety of beautiful, warm neighbourhood-type coffee houses, as well as small bars playing mostly alternative music and a host of ouzo and raki taverns, making this area both lively and welcoming. There are several shops scattered around the area, but the most central parts are Troon Street and Merkouri Square, where metro station Ano Petralona is located on the north of Dorieon Street. Troon Street is an authentic old Athenian street with beautiful small houses and shops, which exudes an atmosphere of bygone times, of a now-forgotten old Athens.

What I can't see

This area is not considered to be touristy and that’s perhaps its strongest advantage. It is mostly frequented by locals, students and visitors, who seek areas not usually found inside the pages of conventional travel guides. The bars here are not the typical loud-music ones of other areas, like the Gazi district. This is a quieter part of town, although in the past, there have been several complaints from residents about noise pollution from local businesses.
