What I can see

The Athens-Epidaurus Festival hosts music, theatre, dance and other cultural events in different parts of the city and the ancient theatre of Epidaurus every summer for about four months. It significantly contributes to the strong cultural livelihood of the city during the summer months. The most prominent achievement of the festival is the harmonious coexistence of contemporary artistic expression with classical antiquity.

What I can't see

The festival aims to broaden the audience that watches the events, the emergence of new artists, the hosting of contemporary artistic trends and cooperation with other European festivals. It is many decades old, and a lot of the most celebrated artistic names worldwide have participated. It did not remain unaffected by the country’s political adventures during these decades. In the postwar period, it was at the heart of the conflict between modernity and the entrenched social and artistic attitudes of the time. During the military dictatorship, it became introverted and declined. Today, however it is a very extroverted festival of international prestige. The Athens Festival is linked with Epidaurus, a leading theatrical destination, in which world-class performances have been staged, and artists and professional organisations from all over the world have participated.
