What I can see
The Academy of Athens Foundation for Biomedical Research is an emblematic building of 1.5 acres, with a height of 16.5 m, and with closed spaces of 24.000 sq.m. Housing mainly laboratories and offices, it has a square at the centre, which creates a continuum between the buildings and their collonades. The roller coil works as an axis, and the materials that dominate the buildings are limestone, white marble and aluminum. The 12 architects who designed it wanted to create a remarkable-and at the same time, functional-building complex.
What I can't see
It is the only centre of its type in Greece, and one of the first in Europe. Its complex electromechanical installations have responded successfully to the institution’s high demands. It houses 50 research teams whose purpose is to develop research in the biomedical sciences, and there have been over 1,200 international publications in a decade resulting from the work done by these teams. Many graduates of the BRFAA, both PhD and post-doctoral students, are working in many universities across Europe and the US.
