What I can see
This work, created by Gabriela Simosi is a 2m high contemporary marble sculpture on a 1.80m high marble base. Its title is “Birds” and consists of two figures, one male and one female, one of which has a human form. Their bodies are positioned facing each other and have irregular shape. It is visible only from the north side of Karaiskaki Square. The sculptures of the square seem to be randomly placed and morphologically unrelated to each other.
What I can't see
It had been temporarily removed from the square to build the metro station. While being transported, the male figure broke. It was roughly reattached and later the sculpture was placed on the north side of the square so that the Monument for Dead Aviators could be erected in its centre. Many citizens do not understand the symbolism behind the Birds and the sculpture is often the object of negative criticism.
