What I can see
The Eugenides Foundation belongs to the elite of the country’s institutions and aims to promote knowledge and science. It is housed in a modern building with simple lines and a few eclectic items and was recently extended. The highlight of the foundation is the new digital planetarium, which promotes educational and scientific content. Projections are three-dimensional, but special glasses are not needed as the 950 sq.m. domed screen gives a 360° stereoscopic view. It seats 280 people and is visited annually by 400,000 people. Until 1999, the old planetarium had been operating, with a 6-metre high projector (at the centre of the old hall), which consists of 29,000 parts, weighs 2.5 tons and was the then largest central projector of the world.
What I can't see
The old building is a work of the architect Andreas Kriezis, known for the design of the Greek parliament’s plenary hall. The entire building of the Eugenides Foundation covers an area of 14,000 sqm, and apart from the planetarium, there is a library, exhibition halls, auditorium (400 seats), lecture halls and laboratories. The library is visited each year by 32,000 people and includes more than 53,000 titles of books and electronic journals and other audiovisual material. Finally, rectors of the National Technical University of Athens participate in the three-member administrative committee of the institution.
