This monument is dedicated to the French archaeologist Charles Lenormant. It is a marble loutrophoros hydria, similar to corresponding monuments of antiquity, which is set on a marble base with relief decoration (e.g., anthemia, wreaths, waves) and a simple pedestal of gray porous limestone. On the main side, we see a medal with Lenormant’s figure and an honorary dedication by the Municipality of Athens for his great work.
According to various sources, his heart is buried here. He wished to be buried near the archaeological site of Plato’s Academy. We do not know who created the original monument. We do know, however, that it was destroyed when some people used it as a shooting target in the early 20th century. On the initiative of the Municipality of Athens, it was replaced with a copy created by Michalis Tombros.
