What I can see

It is the first museum with a permanent collection dedicated to one of the world’s greatest sopranos. Decades after the death of Maria Callas, the museum is founded in her honour and includes historical material, audio documents, record collection, rare live recordings, audio-visual material, photographs and her personal items, such as the letter of Alexis Minotis, her handwritten school notebook , 9 honorary medals, dresses, scores, her notes, the mirror from her performance of La Traviata at La Scala in Milan and other valuable historical items. The museum is housed in a listed building with a total area of 1,070 square metres and fully meets modern museological requirements. The visitor can get to know the artistic career of Maria Callas and enjoy her unique voice. Moreover, the museum houses the bistro “La divina”, a mediateque and a multipurpose room.

What I can't see

Maria Callas (1923-1977) was a world-renowned soprano and her name is a byword for opera, with unsurpassed performances such as in Norma, La Traviata, Medea and Tosca. After her death, her ashes were scattered in the Saronic Gulf, in the country where she was born and took her first artistic steps, to later conquer the world. The Municipality of Athens offered a large part of the collection from objects that had collected from private individuals. Konstantinos and Viktoria Pylarinos, the donors of Callas’ personal items, rejected tempting offers from other big cities, such as Paris and New York, and preferred to donate them to Athens.
