What I can see
In this museum, we can have a tour of the modern Greek monetary history, from the first currency of independent Greece in 1828, to the country’s entry to the Eurozone. More specifically, the collection includes the roots of money in antiquity, means and methods of transactions, the monetary policy of Greece, the evolution of the central bank and the path towards the Eurozone. The building is contemporary and functions as a wing of the old one; therefore it respects it, as can be seen from the symmetry of the openings, the decorative strips, the materials and the earthy colours. The metal at the joints of the cladding material causes interesting light reflections, making the building look more alive, despite some limited application failures.
What I can't see
The main concern of the architect Alexandros Tompazis was the smooth volumetric transition from the higher buildings of Panepistimiou Street to the lower ones of Stadiou Street, as emphasized mainly by the metal sunshade on the terrace. In addition to the collections of the Bank of Greece, the museum often hosts periodical exhibitions and has state-of-the-art technology and multimedia that – combined with the museological approach to the collections – the visitor has a very interesting experience.
