Modern and Contemporary era (1821 - )
1977 When the Margaritouli family was on holidays in Zakynthos, they noticed unusual footprints on the beaches. Until then, there had not been scientific reports on sea turtle spawning in Greece. This was the beginning for the Karetta species to be a symbol of the protection of Greek nature.
1983 The association was founded.
1994 The first rescue centre for sea turtles in the Mediterranean is established in Glyfada.

What I can see
This is a sea turtle protection society, a non-profit association, whose goal is the research and protection of the 7 species of sea turtles and their ecosystems across the country by using state of the art technology and satellites. It also seeks to raise social awareness, educate society and shape a quality cultural landscape.
What I can't see
The association was determinative of research and record actions for the populations and their ecosystems, by mobilizing governmental entities and universities. Two of the 7 turtle species are critically endangered, 1 endangered and 2 vulnerable. These data may change for the worse at any time. Awareness actions and protection programs are based on scientific work and volunteers. The big number of the association’s scientific papers has been published in international scientific journals. It cooperates with 13 Greek organizations (e.g. Institute of Oceanography, Aquarium of Crete), 9 international organizations (e.g. International Union for the Conservation of Nature), 2 European entities (e.g. European Commission), governmental entities, local authorities and other organizations and associations.
