This is a 1.76m marble sculpture of a naked female bather, located at White Tower Square, in a rectangular fountain with water jets. The girl is seated on a rock and looks as if she is about to go into the water. She has a voluptuous, curvaceous body and her face bears an expression of pleasure and nonchalance. Her head looks down, giving the impression that she is admiring her reflection on the water. This position classifies the sculpture in the category of classicist idealism.
The sculpture is the work of sculptor and engraver Nicolas Pavlopoulos aka Nikolas (born in Aghios Georgios/Magnesia, December 1909, died in Athens, 1990). The artist was once accused of having pro-Nazi views and specifically for making busts of Hitler and Mussolini during the years of the country’s Nazi occupation. In 1969, when the country was ruled by the colonels, Pavlopoulos returned to the scene with more sculptures scattered in various parts of Thessaloniki, such as the Boy that Whistles, which adorns the fountain at Navarinou Square.
