What I can see
The statue of Emmanuel Pappas, a work by Memos Makris, is influenced by socialist realism. It is a bronze sculpture, placed on a marble base and surrounded by triangular volumes. Pappas is shown as if he is disembarking from a boat and his figure looks rather stiff.
What I can't see
Emmanuel Pappas (1772-1821) was a merchant and banker from Serres and was often a lender to Turkish magnates, as a result of which he secured better treatment for the people of Serres from the Ottoman administration. With the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence, he was initiated into the Filiki Eteria, spent all his fortune for the purposes of the revolution and was commander-in-chief of the revolutionary Macedonian forces in Halkidiki, where the revolution was ultimately suppressed.
