This bronze sculpture, a work by Alexios Sotos, emphasizes the fighting spirit of the heroes and the figures form the shape of victory with their hands. It is placed on a marble base and there is a marble stele on the left side with the names of the regions of the Middle East and the Aegean, where Greek soldiers fought in World War II. A dedication is also written to honour these soldiers.
The Sacred Band was active in the Aegean, the Middle East and North Africa during World War II, under Commander Christodoulos Tsigantes. The Band fought alongside the British, French and New Zealand forces, with considerable success. As a military body, it was the forerunner of today’s Greek special forces.
