What I can see
Nea Panagia (New Virgin Mary) is a three-aisled basilica with a space for women and some later additions, such as the bell tower. There is a portico on the south and an arcade on the west side. The architectural simplicity and low proportions, ordained by the Ottoman authorities at the time, are in contrast with the rich interior decoration. The 18th century murals are seen as an attempt to return to the artistic standards of the Palaeologian era (13th– 15th centuries). Equally important are the 18th-century wood-carved altar and icons, as well as the 19th century pulpit, bishop’s throne and painted decoration on the ceiling.
What I can't see
It was built on the site of an older Byzantine monastery of the 12th century that had been founded by Hilarion Mastounis and was dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin. The church was formerly known as Megali (Big) or Trani (Great) Panagia (Virgin Mary). According to the Orthodox faith, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary is more important than her Nativity, which is why the church was called Megali Panagia (Great Virgin Mary). The church of Mikri (Little) Panagia (Virgin Mary), also known as Panagouda, is dedicated to the Nativity.
