What I can see
The Old Slaughterhouses followed European standards and were a state-of-the-art industrial facility for its time. It operated until most of the 20th century. It was then transferred out of town. The building is of eclectic architecture, which sets a sophisticated and imposing tone. This style is in contrast to the purpose it served, which was the killing of animals. The recent restoration has preserved the characteristics of the building, which is used by the municipality of Thessaloniki to host a variety of cultural events and activities, such as social, design, musical and theatrical ones, visual arts, lectures and workshops. The wider area of the old slaughterhouses, however, goes in a different direction. In addition to some cultural venues, it hosts clubs, some underground stages, several places with strip shows and sex studios.
What I can't see
The slaughterhouses had infrastructure for slaughtering, hanging and transporting 350 animals per day. During the German occupation, a Frenchman was executed here on charges of possessing a radio and anti-Axis propaganda. He was handed over to the occupying forces by the men of the traitor Laskaris Papanaoum, who was one of the most hated figures in the city. The restoration of the building was carried out by the municipality of Thessaloniki and is considered a very successful case of restoration of an old industrial building.
