What I can see
Porto Palace Hotel retains the early 20th century tannery industrial architecture with the characteristic brick facades, also seen in other industrial units of the era, along 26 Oktovriou Street.
What I can't see
Initially, most of the city’s tanneries were located near Vardari (Demokratias) Square and gradually moved further west. The tanneries of Thessaloniki were among the main suppliers of glove and hat factories in France and England and the markets of Europe, America, Egypt and the Middle East. At that time, leather was not processed. It was placed in cauldrons for days, causing a strong unpleasant smell. During the following decades, leather was cleaned with chemicals, which were very harmful to the environment, making tanneries extremely polluting units.
