What I can see
The redevelopment includes the streets and footpaths of the Acropolis, Odeon of Herodes Atticus and Philopappos Hill. It is considered to be one of the outstanding landscape architecture projects in Athens, as the majority of the panoramic views are of the Acropolis. The architect, Dimitris Pikionis, used materials and forms from ancient, Byzantine and folk traditions, and was clearly influenced by Japanese architecture. In this way, he wanted to express the historical and cultural continuity of Hellenism. The ornate tiling, using vessels and architectural parts and planting plants of Attica on non-excavated antiquities have caused some critical comments. However, through this style, it is commonly accepted that the universality of Greek culture is expressed especially with the reconciliation of architecture, landscape and historical memory.
What I can't see
Pikionis argued that the Greek landscape is the geological basis of modernism in architecture. Using the example of the simplicity of Cycladic architecture, he advocated the turning of modernism to its eastern Mediterranean home. However, Pikionis saw that the excessive abstraction of modernism led to cubism, the new-plasticism and constructivism, creating a style without logic, place, emotion and art.
