What I can see
Approximately 30km from Athens, between Markopoulo and Rafina, one can find the Wetland of Brauron, an important habitat of Attica with its main stream Erasinos. The landscape has stayed almost untouched since ancient times, barely affected by modern development. On both sides of this small river, there are vineyards and fields with pistachio trees and vegetables. Unfortunately, pressure to build in the area as well as some poaching, illegal fishing and sparce landfills have recently been observed. This has resulted in coordinated action to protect the wetland. Schools as well as individual visitors can enjoy local tours by the Greek Ornithological Society, which usually start from the Brauron Museum. Information signs (including Braille signs), an audio-sound system and a path for the blind are available.
What I can't see
To protect the habitat, which is part of the network NATURA 2000, as well as to create awareness in the local community, the Greek Ornithological Society, Markopoulo Municipality and Athens International Airport have joined together in action. The Wetland of Brauron hosts many mammals, reptiles, amphibians and 170 species of birds. Most important perhaps is attikopsaro, a rare small freshwater fish. At the site of the Greek Ornithological Society there is a photo database of the area’s birds (http://www.ornithologiki.gr/page_list.php?lID=2&sp=side&st=yes&sf=no&ss=yes&bc=2353). Moreover, on the first weekend of each October, a special event with activities is held here, featuring bird-watching and release, environmental games and a photography exhibition.
